And the origins of the western and its subsequent hybrid varieties are inextricable from their ideological ramifications, which essentially have to do with perpetuating ideas and visions rooted settler colonialism. Taking their cues from Neil Campbell, who argues that the western's ability to mutate into various impure forms has energized the genre and accounts for its current relevance in a range of contexts, the editors emphasize the persistence of weird westerns in interrogating their very origins by means of-sometimes radical-defamiliarizing narrative strategies. The weird western has a long and complex history and, in their introduction, the editors briefly map out the diverse trajectories of the genre's development by referring in some detail to works such as Charles Brockden Brown's Edgar Huntly (1799), Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915), Dorothy Scarborough's The Wind (1925) and the TV show Westworld (2016-).
